All aboard the Mugo train!

I've shown this on B-nut before, but I want on the train too! I envision bringing the lowest branch on the left down to horizontal, but I wish I could get it to back bud on that long bare section.

I'm not sure what to do with the cluster of branches at the top right. I know there's too many branches but I can't decide which ones to keep. Any suggestions?
It's been two years since I've given an update on this tree! I got busy with small children and didn't have time to devote to small trees for a while.:(
I did end up jinning the top of the tree, and have so far left the lower right branch (which has gotten too big, and is hiding the jin.)
I repotted this past July, and I'm afraid I used a potting medium that holds too much moisture. Some of the needles have started to yellow. Any thoughts on whether I can repot again this late in the season? If I keep it in a semi-heated area to avoid freezing, will it recover from a second repotting in one year?

sounds like a risky gamble. The yellowing needles could just be needles ready to drop. Maybe just give it some shelter during rain storms to help the soil dry up a little and not stay too soggy. Thats what my approach would be.

My first three Mugo pines. Wanted to get on the train and ride as long as possible! Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Pretty sure any thing that needs to be done to prep for becoming bonsai is going to have to wait until next year. Any direction or advice is more than welcome. Thank you all for your inspiring research and beautiful trees!

Nice one Fishtank! What do the Nebari look like? It looks like you have a couple potential fronts.

Thanks! I don't know what the nebari looks like yet.. The base is about 5 cm under the surface. The guy I bought it from is going to help me with the styling. If the nebari and roots are bad, I can pick a new one for free!

Nice find you have there!
I would like to see an update after the fist pruning/selection of branches.
Did you buy this tree from a bonsai nursery or an ordinary one, if I may ask.

Really nice Mugo you have there, remember each branch has its own character so don't go Overpruning, take some needles out/off of the branches to see what the tree has going on....Bring the Bonsai out of it...

From a bonsai nursery :) After the first styling I'll probably open a new thread with updates!

Thanks, Bolero! After the branch selection I will probably only remove the dominant buds before spring, to force some backbudding. It would be nice to develop dense foliage pads and levels on this one.

@clevetromba - needles are probably just old, I don't think you have a serious problem. Wait on repotting until July. Decide then if repotting really needs to happen, or if it can wait until July 2019. Repotting too often can also stress, or slow down a tree. My older pines I try to repot less than once every 5 years if possible. Younger trees, maybe 3 years.

@Vance Wood
I found a small nursery close by that has quite a few mugo's for sale now one of them looks interesting to me its a mugo mops my question is that if you or anyone else know if its a good cultivar for bonsai the needles seem to be smaller then other variety's ive seen
