Hi there ,
fairly new to bonsai and I have a
couple questions here. I wanted to know what type of tree this was ? Secondly, I was wondering if its too late in the season for an air layer ? I live close to Ottawa Canada, witch is a Zone 5. So I was wondering if it was too late in the summer to grow roots and survive the potting .See attached photos and Thanks!

It looks to be a variety of native juniper. I have never personally air layered juniper, but it can be done as shown in this Mirai video.

All right thanks for Info , Btw I just noticed I'm actually zone 4 and went back today to set up the air layer hopefully I'll have enough time in the season.🤞

In my experience, it is almost certainly too late to start an air layer in zone 5 and have it ready to separate and plant by the fall.

Agreed.

Keep it on through winter.

Can’t junipers take much longer than deciduous trees? I remember seeing it can take up to 12-18 months but not sure if that’s juniper or other conifer type. Even so seems like would require to be over winter regardless. I have only done deciduous so that’s all I know

I've only done one juniper (San Jose), but it was pretty quick. I'm sure it varies.

Not sure when in spring of '23 I started it, but separated July 24th, 2023.

Okay I’ll leave it on for the winter. Thanks guys ! 😁
It would’ve been better to have just waited until spring to start the layer, but since you already did start it, keeping it on through the winter is the only viable option. Nothing much is going to happen over the winter. It won’t start growing again until spring. So, really, it’s as if you started in spring anyway but with a branch that is weaker than it otherwise would have been.
