Air Layering Japanese maple

I did four successful AL last year on this tree. Those four are growing in their own pots at the moment. I did another four AL this year.....the mother tree is slowly getting shorter and shorter, lol. This cultivar pushes out roots extremely fast.
Oh that's good. I have one that I want to AL but haven't have time to do it. What's your medium? Sphagnum Moss?

Shishigashira will air layer. Does anyone know about pinebark (nishiki) Japanese maple?

I started a layer on Nishiki gawa at the same time as the Arakawa above. No roots yet (1 month out) but top looks healthy, so I’ll keep you posted.

I started an orange dream 6 Weeks ago, yesterday I saw the first root just peeking out. Hope more will follow

Trying to air layer an A. palmatum higasayama. In its fourth week and not sure of the progress since it is in my brother's landscape. I will be going over there in a few more weeks and see. Very beautiful and unique maple!

Bihou and Viridis failed. Mikawa yatsubusa is still looking ok. I think this will be it for air layering this year. I would rather graft them next year onto rooted stock.

don't let this discourage you - viridis, a dissectum, is not just notoriously difficult; most would say it's impossible to air layer!

you probably did everything right - it's the tree that was wrong!

Maybe, maybe not. We had a lot of rain the past couple of weeks. That could be the issue? It was just too wet.

Reason I said that is because I would prefer grafting multiple trees from one branch verse havin just one tree from an air layer. I don't want to risk loosing any more branches.

Just removed this pinebark. Accidentally detached a little early (thought there were more roots than there were). Roots are single sided but so far so good.

Some of my sango kaku cuttings that I planted in the fall have rooted and put out new leaves this spring. I didn’t have all that high of a success rate, but that is likely due to being very new to tree propagation and not very practiced at it yet.

Acer palmatum osakazuki (not suprised since evergreen gardenworks had cuttings).

Acer shirasawanum ‘palmatifolium’
I was not sure if this one would root, but it put out a bunch of fine roots.

Chishio improved ready to seperate.
@b3bowen Was initially going to take cuttings from a small Chishio improved.Instead I think tomorrow I’m gonna do a air layer my I ask how long did it take to separate & start forming roots.
Chishio improved

It was one of my earlier ones to form roots. Started most of these at the end of March when leaves were extending looks like I seperated may 21st. Roots were very strong growing and plant is still doing great on its own feet. I know there is debate here but I think clonex hormone has significantly improved my sucess rate.

Red pygmy (strap leaf)
Roots came out early then stopped growing. It was a very small layer and detached just fine. Not sure how strong it will be on its own roots.
