Ugh, this tree needs rootwork badly! I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and ground layer it this coming year. So it's got ugly scars. A funky trunk and little character. I've learned a bunch from it:

Check the roots when you buy a new tree. Don't just let it sit for a year if it's already rootbound.

If you miss a day of watering and get leaf burn at the end of the season, your fall colors will all be brown.

Here's the direction we're going with your help:

Read my old reply above your post, and it still applies to the roots. Gotta do what you gotta do...It will be a really good one someday.

I've got burned by not sorting the roots out the first season I have had trees. Nearly lost my itoigawa but it is recovering. I love the animated gif!

Point taken. We take 1 step back to take 2 forward. Thank you for your vote of confidence :)

I still owe the forum a quick tutorial on how easy it is to make these. It takes little time and effort. Okay, not exactly little effort, but once you're all set with your tripod and turntable, no sweat!

You've caught me lordy! That is my absolute favorite tree and this one, I hope, will emulate it in the distant future. Thanks for commenting :)
