Been following your development, good things.
If mine would probably let run with practically no cuts and only wire for a season to beef up, heal, and gain strength..🤔rather than repotting.

Repotted last year. This year was it's rest year. It's not quite set root wise so until I have the nebari sorted, Im keeping this tree on an every other year schedule. I also may put it in a nice pot.

Took wire off a few weeks ago. Held well. Looks like a branch died back. Going to remove and replace with a better back branch that I will wire movement into. Nebari is getting bulky.

Love to see it man, keep going with this one

Planning a repot next year on this. Im seeing some larger roots and want to make sure the tree is balanced.

Also would like to cut back hard to some gain some ramification. Will see how it responds to repot.

Yeah, ramification and leaf size has been the obvious obstacle in these.
They look really cool after a cut back when new growth is still small.

I’m happy to see you have had success with repotting as I plan on repotting my 2 next spring.

Repotting has never been an issue. I usually repot as soon as I see some very slight movement into the buds. For me, that has been as follows:

2019: March
2020: March 11
2021: March: 3

I have had no issues afterwards. 4b likely would be a bit later. I am 7b. I didn't realize it will be 3yrs next spring since the last repot on this. Time flies!

The progress on this tree is amazing and makes me super excited to see how mine turns out, I collected it in august this year and it’s taken to its pot very well. It was less than a year old I believe before I picked it up as I hadn’t seen it the year before. I’ve also dived into growing bonsais from seed, I’ve successfully sprouted a wisteria floribunda specimen about 2 weeks after I collected my boxelder baby. They’re about the same size now and the wisteria has known nothing but the pot it’s in.

I’m also working on sprouting acorns for oak trees cuz an oak in the neighborhood was definitely in its mast year and I couldn’t resist picking them up as I walked by. I’m in the bonsai journey for the long haul and don’t mind it taking over 10 years to get beautiful results from these trees. It’s only been 4 years since you’ve collected yours and look at how beautiful it is.

Good luck with your trees! Thanks for the compliments. Tree is bulking up now for winter again.

End of year report. Tree definitely slowed down this year in terms of overall bulking up. After each repot, the tree has gained nearly 1/4" of girth. This was the case in 2019, 2020, and 2021. I did work the tree a bit harder this year than others in terms of wiring and pruning so that may have had an impact on where it's resources were directed.

Next year: Repot the tree and do some root work. Fertilize heavily, possible give a mid summer prune depending on response, and get it ready for bigger things and work the following rest year.

Previous year's front: 20231114_230517.jpg

New likely front... it leaves the back a bit flat so... hopefullt will get some back branching in the future to fill out the back of the tree.

Thanks! Im going to let the left primary branch run the rest of the year to bulk it and the lower trunk up.

The best time for this species is early summer right after a late spring prune it seems.
