So, we have these in the nursery and they drive me crazy because of their curled leaves which makes me think that they are in need of watering or they have some kind of funk. Turns out these are called flying bird maples in Japan or Crane maple and today I just noticed why...

They look kinda funky on a small tree, but I'll bet they would look cool on a tree in landscape!

I always wanted this cultivar! It supposedly grows more vigorously than the plain species, has better fall color, and also has that crazy texture. Trident Maples have a tougher time in my neighborhood than Palmatum.

They definitely need a lot of foliage, and it helps to know the reference to birds flying.

I have not noticed that and we grow roughbark tridents, regular tridents, variegated tridents, and these guys.

Be that as it may, I have not noticed a difference in how fast these grow.
