ABS Learning Seminars in association with the 9th US National Bonsai Exhibition, Rochester, NY, USA, September 12-13, 2025

I plan to attend, but as I'm flying from Seattle, I wonder if all/most the workshops will be based on working on material for purchase. This may limit my options, and I'd honestly rather not work on my own material due to the travel.
We have a sprinter van going and coming from Oregon, if anyone needs to transport goods. ☺️ Just PM me and we can chat about arrangements. The van coming back west will be pretty much empty, we can provide transport for Nationals/abs purchases needing to head back! We have two folks needing transport back so far. Climate controlled, and driver can water if needed.

I might just take you up on that, thanks Mary!

Just plugging the Bring Your Own Tree workshops at the ABS Learning Seminar in Rochester. So many of us purchase beautiful material from the world class vendors at the nationals. I know I plan on buying one or two. Here’s a great opportunity - buy your tree in the morning and create a masterpiece out of it with Bjorn Bjorholm / Boonyarat Manakitivipart / Hugo Zamora at the learning seminars in the afternoon. Our headline artists will help you begin the styling process and build a personalized plan for the future. What a great way to bring home something that you’ll be proud of on your bench! See you there!!

If anyone was planning on entering a pot into the North American Bonsai Pottery Competition, the application deadline has been extended. Come be a part of this very special event!

I wanted to highlight some of the Private Demos as we are very excited about these events. What is a Private Demo? It's the bonsai version of a “theater in the round”. Tired of giant demonstration events where you’re miles away from the artist and can’t see or hear a thing? Here is something completely different for the serious practitioner. Private Demos are limited to an attendance of 20 people, so you'll be sure to have an up front seat as our talented artists apply their considerable skills toward work on complicated material while discussing styling, care, and maintenance. After the demo, the tree will be auctioned to the audience and you’ll have an excellent opportunity to take the demo tree home for yourself!

In the first of these events, Bjorn will restore an old, imported Japanese White Pine
When imported many years ago, this massive Japanese White Pine was a spectacular bonsai. Through its decades living in the US, it has graced the benches of several major North American collections. Due to an illness however, its maintenance has been neglected of late and it has lost some of its former luster, presenting a fascinating challenge for Bjorn. He is very excited to work on this tree. Register early to grab an up front seat to see and hear how Bjorn plans to restore this spectacular tree to its glory days. After the demo, the tree will be auctioned to the audience and one lucky attendee will walk out with a spectacular specimen Japanese White Pine to add to their collection!

Reading into this are there no trees on display and no vendors? Thought it read like this on link to ABS stating how this is different. And do you register for main event on Bill V website and classes on another? Thanks

The two events—the ABS Learning Seminars and the 9th US National Bonsai Exhibition—are being produced separately, but nearby. Different organizations, collaborating together. The ABS seminars will be educational and hands on events, while the exhibition will have the show and vendor area.

You can purchase tickets to the exhibition on Bill’s site here:

Thanks for clarifying and are they at same or different locations?

So if you pick to do a demo and not part of ABS have to buy the class plus a non membership ticket?

Thanks for clarifying and are they at same or different locations?

The Learning Seminar is at the convention space of the Official Hotel for the US National Bonsai Exhibition. The Exhibition is at the Total Sports Experience Arena in East Rochester - about a 10 minute drive from the hotel.

Yes. The difference between the member price and the non member price is the cost of an annual ABS membership, which you will receive as part of your purchase.
