In the beginning I used a lot of wire. Now it is mostly clip and grow with the occasional wire here and there.

I love seeing these big yaupon holly's. They are so plentiful in the woods around here they are literally everywhere. If all I could have were just Yaupon and BC I'd be happy.
The last one I got was also a really old and large landscape Yaupon that probably no human had touched for at least the last 10 years, I wonder why it didn't revert back to a tall leggy plant in that time? as they are typically more tree like than bush like in the fields around here. It was still looking like a hedge type plant, very compact like a box wood or something.

Update: I gave one of these guys a hard trim. It should have time to fill in before cooler weather hits. It was 92 and raining today.

Great job! I have one about the same size. Like yours, it's really ramified. Mine seems to be a male plant also......... no berries in 4 years. I have a much smaller one that is full of berries.

It doesn't seem to take long with these, 2 months or so. I mostly do just clip and grow with these now.

Like Walter Pall says "Too many branches is a good problem to have." Looks like you sorted them out.

I find, with this kind of tree, I forget most of the classic bonsai guidelines and just get the foliage pulled down and more evenly distributed.

What is your usual maintenance pruning schedule with these? Looks like a spring and a fall trim/style from the thread.
I collected one last winter that I held off on repotting this year. How long did you let them grow out before repotting them from those plastic boxes?

I think they were in the tubs for couple of years. Probably could have moved the sooner, but I did not have the pots.
They could be pruned all summer, I don't have the time right now so Sping and late Summer/ Fall. Our club usually has a showds them, so it is usually to get them ready for that.
