A nice find became a raft

Look at this wild tree that was found in the woods near my house in NJ. I believe it to be a hedge maple raft. Will see soon when it leaves. The largest trunk is dead in the middle.

Looks as if a truck rolled over it and it sank into the mire. I thought I was getting just the one and realize they were attached.

If that takes off proper you will have your hands full but it will be worth it. That could be pretty cool if you plan it over a several year progression. Make sure you photo document it and thanks for sharing!

Thank you Grimmy, It looks real cool and the dead wood is awesome. I really like to carve some so I will have my hands busy, maybe I will show it to Mario Stemberger who is coming to our club at the end of the month.

I guess there is drainage in that planter, if its a maple it should do fine for you. It looks almost like some sort of apple judging by the bark. Good luck with it.

I don't think that's a red maple as the bark and color doesn't look right, once it leaves out you could get a better ID

Might be a liquidambar styraciflua (Sweetgum). http://dendro.cnre.vt.edu/dendrology/syllabus/factsheet.cfm?ID=53.

Could well be a sweetgum. They sprout from heavy roots and tend to form thickets -- especially if they have been cut or damaged in some way. Quite difficult trees for bonsai. But doable.

Yes Ed, I put two large holes in that planter. It is odd though, I dig it out in very wet soil. Hope it is still some type of maple or something easier for me to handle.

They are doable as jkl said. You could come up with something pretty unique and very nice if you are willing to spend some time on it. Trimming is not that hard after all
