wow I am impressed with the new growth. I look forward to seeing it in a month.

I applaud the effort, and the plant is bouncing back nicely. You must be taking good care of it. However, I believe you chose the wrong trunk line, as there was much more taper and interest in the right-hand "branch" that you removed.

I would have to agree with you but at the rate it's growing there'll be plenty of more choices in no time at all. Not the ideal situation but workable.

Good progress. The growth may reach more than 5 feet before fall if you do not touch it. Mine did. ;)

Hard to say because I can't see the nebari. Most of the time, I choose/compromise the trunk line based on it.

Trunk line

Thanks for input. The angle in that 'curve' now seems pretty substantial to me. I don't know how realistic the other would have been. But maybe you're right. In any event it will be a learning experience.

I recently took a styling class from a long time artist and walked away with a lot of great information. However, his continuous use of three words will forever guide my pruning and cutting; "Prune for taper, prune for taper, prune for taper."

lagerstroemia indica 'miami'

yep it is a crape myrtle. or crepe myrtle to some. Or if you're nerdy about plant names like me Lagerstroemia indica 'Miami'.

Ah I see now, thanks Poink88, Txhorticulture

The bark is still pretty "rough" for such a big tree? Or does it just LOOK big? Hahaha

Ive worked two nana's for a while once, the fungus zoomed in on them though, and the whole street is lined with them but mine just kept getting hit
Fantastic species though, I will definitely go for it again someday if I had the chance on great stock

The trunkline looks good I think, if it gets those veins it will be veeery nice

Edit: just looked at the pics for the third time and I can see its smaller but my mind keeps tellimg me otherwise
Too much latenight posting on my side I guess

Nice job. I would wire some initial movement into that new growth before it hardens off, then hedge it back later on for taper.

Good point. Those branches will grow fast and harden off quickly. Before you know it they are nearly pencil thick and don't give in very easily to bending much. They will crack very easily if you bend them too much at that stage.

This is excellent advice in a few words. Good post, good thread.

That's better than the phrase that is still echoing in my head from last spring's colloquium in Rochester..."whack it off". Dennis Makishima must have used that one about 100 times during his presentations and workshops.

Well I'm new to bonsai in the sense i haven't tried to make bonsai trees in bonsai pots for very long but I've been growing, collecting, pruning, repotting container plants for a decade or so.

My point being i feel good about my horticultural and botanical knowledge, but not about my artistic styling knowledge. And wiring plants is definitely in the artistic styling category. In other words i know a lot about some stuff and nothing about others. I do have some bonsai wire. I probably need more. I'll give it a shot and see what the board thinks. Thanks for feedback and encouragement.

Despite your admitted lack of experience you chose to insult Brian Van Fleet who is a fine artist and person. Since you insulted him he has not been back in 10 days. He was one of the best things about Bnut. You owe him an apology and if you don't you're an ass.

This post is uncalled for.

You don't know if he is the culprit, it could be me, someone else, or no one. BVF is an adult, he can decide for himself what he wants to do. Is it a loss for us if he leave? I think so. Will we die w/o him? Unlikely.

People in forums come and go, and everyone have their own limits. Nothing can change that.
