Here's a few pix of some from seed. The one in the court yard of my home has been 'wild' for the past 2 seasons and will get wired next Fall. The smaller one trimmed a bit and wired fully. More pad fill in required and a few more branch movements (top RH side down a little)

Vance, you are a legend for growing these pines from seed since the 90s!

That is about the same time period of my entire life 😂

Very cool. I have some pine seedling projects I started in 2020, so perhaps one day I can share some photos with some “young” whipper snappers after 30 years of care….gods willing!

Gorgeous trees! I planted my first seeds (intentionally) this year. Hopefully my piñon will be half as noteworthy as yours, assuming I live another 30 years.

I didn't realize you were such a whippersnapper yourself!

Colorado and Desert O,
These three along with another two, have only been grown in pots. And at that, pots nearly the size you see. Obviously the other post I have made on JBP were two that were field grown from 1yr seedlings that I bought for a $1.00 each and planted them in my father's back acre. Left them for five years root pruning and side prunig to keep them viable for bud development on interior branches.
Well, I started in 1971 ......just out of grad school....LOL

I graduated hs in 95. It's true what they say about the best time to plant a bonsai tree is 20 years ago. Until the plandemic, this was just a passing interest. Ten months of job searching is a lot more stressful than any job I've ever had. So I started channeling that negative energy into killing trees. YT is not a good place to find good bonsai advice.

A couple years ago, I found Bonsai Nuts here and started browsing a bit, and finally really got serious about this forum in June. So much to learn in the bottom of my inning of life. I might have a long time as a man, but not even a day in tree time.

If you can find a local bonsai club you might find that depending on how the club is run and such a good source for seminars that are local and inexpensive. It is an adventure. Just plant good quality stock IN THE GROUND if you have space and get cheap junipers and such from your garden center to 'start on'.....and you'll gain some knowledge on keeping things alive to the next 'repot' session...ie a few years..

That's what everyone has been saying. I'm extremely remote. The nearest bonsai club is ±4 hours away in Albuquerque. I really wish there was a closer club and at least one experienced practitioner to guide us/me. For now, you and others here are my club.

I have 4 elm, a currant, a tree of heaven (what was I thinking!?), and an 'Old Gold' juniper planted in the ground. The elms and currant were collected last November, ToH volunteered, and Old Gold was nursery stock.

Get Jonas Dupuich's new book: The Essential Bonsai Book Direct from him at https://bonsaitonight.com it's about $35.00 including shipping and frankly I have nearly every bonsai book published and this one is IT!
No further titles need apply!

If possible subscribe to Mirai live and will have many archived sessions from his archive as well.
