Here’s the beginning of a exciting 5yr journey with this japanese maple.

I’m gonna take a few days to figure out what direction I want to go with this tree, but at the moment I’m thinking pic #1 will be the front and next spring I’ll do a partial repot due to the dense clay soil it’s in. Then I’ll chop/air-layer off the left branch

Sweet little tree. Is it grafted?

If it is it is very well done, now that I’m looking at it again I see very tight internodes all the way to the roots. This may actually be a cutting grown mikawa. If so you hit it out of the park with this one. very very nice!

Its quite possible that its an EXTREMELY well done graft.
I knew a very old nurseryman years ago (87yrs old) that could produce a graft that was invisible...and i mean invisible!
He used to say to me "pick the graft and i'll give the tree to you"...for the life of me, i couldnt and IF i ever did, it was a wild guess (in which case id confess) lol.
People used to take great pride in their work!
