Very cool! I see a nice carving project in there, any idea the cultivar or color of the flower on this one?
Re carving: I agree with you and it "Scares me" I have never done carving before or anything like it but just ordered a small dremel lol.
Re cultivar: no I have no idea, all I know is that it is not the nana but a "regular" punica granatum.
By the way if anyone has any insights on how to proceed next I'm all in

When did you repot? If this season id say just let it run wild and build up a bunch of energy in those roots for next year, but if you repotted last year you can probably do some branch selection and carving...
For carving...grab the “little terrier” from kaizen and some 1/8 shaft saboor tooth burrs from amazon, watch some YouTube videos and go to town, that’s some nice stock to practice on ?

Some Graham potter and Harry Harrington vids on YouTube will point you in the right direction but if you have someone close to you who is experienced in carving definitely get some lessons first

I would have kept the suckers, cut the main trunk out and grew a clump.

@Potsofgreen it was collected in late August 2018, root ball cleaned and put in a draining soil I didn't repot this year just cleaned the suckers
Interesting view thanks for sharing, I would have never thought about it, yet I feel it would be a share to throw the whole trunk away wouldn't it be? (or am I in a beginners mindset)

My thought process was.... I saw the suckers and they seemed vigorous compared to the top, in the first pics.
But you've clearly got plenty of top growth now, so stick with it man!

Perhaps, take some cuttings from mother and spend three
years experimenting on the rooted cuttings.
3 years later or more decide what you want to do.
Try not to learn on mothers.

When I don't know what to do with a tree that could be taken many different ways, I simply let it grow for a year or two without doing any serious pruning and no attempt to style it. Usually within 3 years the new growth added will suddenly make one of the possible options obvious. So don't rush. Let it grow and mull it over in your mind for a year or two. Pomegranates make great bonsai and this tree could go many different directions.
I would also purchase one or more of the carving tools suggested above, and begin practicing on pieces of dead wood. Never do your first carving project on a tree you like. Practice on dead logs, branches, and other scrap items until you learn to control your tools and create natural looking carvings. Then in a couple years you will feel up to the task of carving taper into the pomegranate. Keep some low branching and let develop until you are ready to style. The low branches might inspire an idea. The more branches up and down the tree, the more options when it comes time to style the tree.

Absolutely! Straight trunk boring. Should have saved lowest trunk branch and cut back to it after becoming strong. Good sized basal trunk is good. Not interesting tree as presently sitting
