This variety looks to grow in a more vine like fashion. Both of these plants are now fully outside

Bougainvillea are vines....trained into a tree. You need to cut the long vines back hard to encourage branching. It will also encourage back budding.

Again...did I miss where your location was?

The variety I have is a pink pixie.

Managed to get the small cutting to flower. After rooting, I left it without water for 10 days in the sun (about 5 hrs sun per day) over Christmas. Outside temp maxed out at 29C in the shade so sun would have been maybe upto 40C

As soon as the bracts started to develop I watered sparingly. Once almost fully developed I started to add 10-30-30 fertiliser every week and moved to 5 or 6 hrs sun per day.

Internodes is the distance between the leaves on the branch. And yes, yours have long internodes. Your leaves if kept outside...should look tight and thick on a branch.

Your leaves also look like they are lacking something...and have a deficiency of some sort. They should be a solid healthy green. See where yours looks to have veining?

After a repot and partial defoliation...my leaves are coming back. This shows a branch and how thick the leaves look with smaller internodes. Makess for fuller canopy when said and done.

This was really good advice, mine is filling out now in the sun. Still some of the leave are more yellow than others. Maybe it is the roots or the sun is too strong (?). Anyway good plan to move it to the sun. I kept it shaded for about a month after the repot. The roots are still in pretty bad shape and now I think I could have removed more considering the vigor of these plants

Wow guys! You were right about this being a hardy plant! Two weeks in the shaded balcony area and my pseudo-cutting is popping buds right to the edges of most of the cuts! All leaves dropped except one right at the top of the plant which I thought was unusual. But if i follow where the vein for that leaf goes it is near to where the largest root mass was so kind of makes sense.

The die back on the vines I see here that have been cut must be because they don't seal the cuts and this must dehydrate them in the heat then (?). I thought it might be a trait of the plant but it seems not!! Kind of wish I'd have cut it back further now! Better to be safe than sorry I suppose.

So relieved that is has pushed through, I counted 20 new buds, but it's not out of the woods yet. Well it is out of the woods, but not 'the woods' ha ha ha :0)

I have moved it to a spot where it will get a touch more sun now but still nothing direct. Here is the leaf and the biggest buds (still tiny but enough evidence to give it a bit more sun I hope?). Any advice on what to do next would be appreciated. I haven't started fertiliser yet I hope this is best practice (?)

Hey guys, thanks for the advice, great stuff. Bourgie coming on nicely thanks to your input here, keeping it quite wet still. I expect the roots are coming in well now and only about 2 months since I cut it! These tropical things are fast beasts, deciduous trees don't stand a chance on the growth rates of these!!

Had two flushes of flowers since last post and now the foliage is looking super tight! Again, full sun compacts the foliage. I tried nitrogen with this and greened up a bit. I think it might be iron deficiency as the fertiliser has magnesium, but not much iron. pH is neutral to acid as well.



Here it is beside the other type, I think the other one is similar to your type Cadillactaste a pink pixie variety. This one came back from iron deficiency and greened up when I acidified the soil. Took a while with coffee grounds.

And the other one was kept in full sun first then partial shade internode spacing increased in the partial shade hugely so back in full sun now. I will cut this back after the flowers have subsided.
