So, new to this whole bonsai thing, I know bonsai are made from larger tree/bushes. One would cut a tree back until the proper size for a bonsai. (And hope new shoots would spring from the cut off area area correct?)
I went to my local nursery and they had some Japanese maples, and I thought...
I picked up this japanese maple at a landscape nursery on my way home from work this evening . . . at a reduced price because it's damaged ;)
So am I - we should get along fine.
Ive got a few maples that are recovering from major branch removal within the last couple years and I am wondering when the very best time is to re-injure those scars and seal with cut paste. Last year I did it after the new growth hardened off and the results were pretty good. Also, I assume...
Just came across this page earlier, pretty cool stuff.

Bennie was a long time member and past president of the Austin Bonsai Society. He was a gracious man whom I only had the privilege of meeting a few times. On one of my visits, Bennie gave me this tree.
Bennie was quite well known in the area for his maples and azaleas - he propagated them...
March 2015
Repotted into 1st training pot from a large plastic 'bowl'.
I recut the callous tissue that had stopped rolling over a chop scar. Wound covered with paste.
I bought this tree from a club member who started it from seed. I've had it for 3 years now.
It will go into the ground or a...
Hey everybody, I have a few questions about what I think is a Bloodgood J.M. I guess it could be Emperor 1 or Fireglow, they all look so similar to me when they're this small and very hard to tell the difference.

I've had this one for several years, having raised it from a seedling. It might not be your cup of tea. I don't say that as a cop out, because I'd like your input. I just know its different than what many strive for, ...myself included sometimes. Regardless of all that, what do you think?
April 2012
Collected as a seedling in Portland, OR.
May 2013
Basic wire training.
April 2014
It continues to be my most productive seedling. I upgraded it from a 1 to 2 gallon pot; to the left is a white birch volunteer.

One of the growth tips would get a fungal infection...
Here is a stock plant I bought in fall '08, worked down the roots pretty hard in spring '09, and stuck it into a big wooden box and forgot about it for a couple years, except to layer a couple branches out of it.
Yesterday I noticed it was pushing growth pretty hard, so I decided to repot...
Looking over this J. Maple and considering removing the lower-right branch...it started as a sacrifice and I got used to looking at it. It's pretty thin, but I do like the full look it brings when the tree is in leaf.
So...what do you think; keep it or cut it?
I'll also post a photo of...
