I acquired a couple of mature japanese maples at an auction a couple of months ago. One was, and still is, very healthy. The other not so much. Looking back, I realize I probably should not have purchased it as I noticed it had several issues at the auction, but alas, it does not seem severe...
Hi Everyone! I am fairly new to Bonsai, and have accumulated a few young trees since this spring. As fall and winter approach in Colorado, I want to make sure I take proper care of each tree. The information I have found online hasn't been the most helpful, so any advice would be appreciated! I...
Came across this Japanese maple on holiday. It looks like a variegation, a bit like JM butterfly. It's the only branch like it, and it's definitely a branch of the same tree. Sunburn is a possibility but this branch was not really more exposed than the rest.
Picked this tree up yesterday from the Midamerica bonsai exhibition, what are your guys’ thoughts and opinions? Liked it for the base thickness and nebari. Not sure what my future plan should be, I was with my girlfriend so I couldn’t talk with the vendor long. The pot is massive, how many years...
A few pictures, a few observations and a few questions. Introducing my new Green Japanese Maple, purchased in May, 2025, my first maple bonsai. The company I purchased the tree from says it is 3-4 Years old.
The leaves have gotten quite burnt, we have had some extremely hot days recently here...
Hi guys,
I wanted to share some photos of the cuttings I took late May/early June. I’ve never made a post on Bnut despite anll I’ve taken from the forum, and I’ve started feeling like a bit of a freeloader since I am well past my 3-year grace period (IYKYK:p). So, here are a few photos...
I just acquired a new Sharp's Pygmy Japanese maple. It arrived from Mississippi yesterday afternoon. I looked at the Japanese maple this morning and again about 30 minutes ago and noticed that the leaves are browning.
I watered the tree yesterday afternoon after putting it in my enclosure...
I have a baby Japanese Ryusen maple and I started to notice the new leaves at the end of this one branch are turning black and dying. The rest of the leaves on the tree are green and healthy, just the ones at the end of this branch look not as healthy... It's been pretty hot here and the tree...
Hello everyone !
I am an absolute beginner, as my bonsai journey has started only a few months ago. Since then, I have acquired quite a few trees, at different stages of developement, from bonsai nurseries and general nurseries. After following a lot of posts on this forum, reading and watching...
Contemplating a trunk chop.... What would you do, This this is is like 2 feet tall now and trunk is 2-3 inches.... is this the right time to do it? would you go lower?
I recently picked up this maple from a pop up shop here in SoCal, I couldn’t say no. Now the plant is usally on my balcony and I have a sun blind to help with some stippled shade for my other maple but up until last week we have been very overcast and cloudy so I’ve had it closest to the open to...

Is anyone else attending this event as well? Looking forward to meet more people on this community!
My team will be there as a vendor with Japanese maples, pines, junipers and pots. We hope a great turn out of this event!
I picked this up from a nursery. It’s about 4 feet tall. Could I turn this into a bonsai? What first steps would you recommend? I’m in zone 9a, south Texas. I don’t mind growing it out normal because I was wanting a potted Japanese maple to grow out for shade/privacy on my deck. Thanks for any...
After going down multiple rabbit holes regarding air layering, I decided to bite the bullet and commit to cutting up some trees of my own!
Before applying damp sphagnum moss, I brushed the top of each cut site with Clonex rooting gel (vibrant purple gel). I then wrapped each layer with plastic...
Hi everyone, hope you’re well.
My Japanese maple has been going quite strong for some time, but some of the branches look like they’re infected with verticillium wilt and I was hoping for some advice on what to do next.
I’ve scratched the branches and the layer beneath on the black spots have...
I have about 10 maple trees left in my stock. They are a rare find in Canada.
Some of them are Maihime maples, and some are Japanese maples.
They were grown outside all year round. All of them are small, with a diameter of about 10mm. Since the trunk has been worked on, and I only have 10 left...
Got it from someone’s yard for free. Thing has to be atleast 35 years old. May eventually trunk chop it to try making a chonky broom .. but will leave alone for now. Collected an even bigger one a year ago and is doing fine.. so this will def pull through
Hey guys,
I collected some Deshojo Maple cuttings last October and some Katsura cuttings about a month ago, and I planted them in the same growing box right after collecting. Now, a few months have passed, and the buds on the Deshojo cuttings are starting to look unhealthy, while the Katsura...
Hi everyone
Firstly - happy new year and wishing you all the best for 2025.
My friend is currently house sitting for me and has sent me these videos of my two Japanese maples. One is a bloodgood and I’m unsure of the other cultivar. They both seem to be suffering from extreme heat stress and I...
I purchased this tree from a local greenhouse back in September.
I did some initial pruning earlier in the fall and now with the foliage all gone, am looking to get some thoughts on if a big chop is necessary at this point to help it along the process of becoming a decent bonsai. I thought I’d...
Hi need advice if I had done the right method of ground layering. The tree in question, Deshojo Japanese maple. Currently it is end of spring in Sydney, Australia. I am hoping to start a new nebari journey. If anyone has advice for aftercare of ground layering I would be grateful for any tips on...
Hey there!
I am very much interested in collecting a few exclusive species of trees and looking if someone has them on for sale. I will happily accept cuttings and air layers. With a budget of 50$, looking to buy both of these trees:
Katsura Japanese maple
Deshojo Japanese maple
Please reply...
Hey all, I live in Northern Michigan and have a Japanese bonsai tree. I've had it since Spring so this'll be my first year taking care of a bonsai tree over the winter.
I keep it outside so far, as it has not gotten super cold up here yet.
Lately it's leaves have turned a darker red, but most...
Hello! I’m completely new here. I’ve been using this message board for years now to learn but never joined. More of a lurker, but here we are. I’ve joined because I have an interesting question I would love to pose to the group.
I have a Japanese maple in training that will one day be a pseudo...
