Hello all,
I have recently acquired a beautiful Japanese maple and given it's size I am hoping to soon transplant it into a smaller pot. I understand how to trim the roots properly, but am looking for a good mix to plant it in. I know that plain old potting soil is not what you want, but as...
Hello everyone,
I'm new here and fairly new to bonsai trees. I'm not entirely sure of what type of tree I have, but it's been doing very well. I've had it for about 6 months and seems to be growing. However, I have noticed I have these incredibly tiny black bugs that crawl all over the soil and...
Hey everyone, I am new to bonsais and I bought one about a month or so ago. It was doing great until I noticed little webs between the branches and browning of leaves , I am young so I don't have the opportunity to go out whenever I want so I asked to go buy pesticides, which I am today getting...
Everyone has an opinion on "Is bonsai art?" My thoughts are contained here, in this brief 4-page article.

Just picked up a rather sweet piece of material this past weekend... that is full of Flowers!
A very, very old Singapore Holly (Malpighia coccigera).
Plans? Not actually much... just clean up some of the problem areas.
Will be treating this more like a Flowering Quince. Going with a...

Hi all,
For the first time in a few years I am having real problems bringing my bonsai out of hibernation. The trees have moved around a lot, unfortunately, and I am worried that their current home outside my window is not providing enough light.
My trees are 2 Elms, and a Yew. They've been...
Well, I can now say that I'm officially moving to Portland in June to start an apprenticeship with Michael Hagedorn. I've worked with Michael on and off for several years, and I'm excited to study with him in his yard full-time! I spent last week working with him in his yard, along with current...

I've been doing bonsai for a long time, and I've gotten great at the horticultural and technical aspects. But advanced styling is still largely a mystery to me. I know all the basic rules and can style a decent tree, but I'm always impressed with what more advanced members can do with the mature...
Hello all! First, I just want to say thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to help me here.
I am extremely new to Bonsai trees. I was very interested in caring for one, so for Christmas, I received a Chinese Elm from my girlfriend. However...we are a bit concerned...
So, I received a...
I've always been curious. How do you create this excellent nebari?
I know techniques that include placing a tile underneath the tree and force the nebari to grow outwards. Is that the technique that produces the attached result?

Here's a few pictures I took tonight of my English ivy.
I have had this tree for about five and a half years now collected as urban yamadori.
One thing I like about this Ivy is the leaves seem to reduce quite well.
If anyone has any pictures of some examples of Ivy bonsai feel free to post them...

Here is my display from KAWA'S J.O.B. taken this January. Quite a few pots and trees fit into such a small space! It was a great mini-convention up in Bunnell, Florida.
