It did bud back fairly well but everything was in the wrong places. Compost now. My mother had one for 30 years and it was cut back to the ground every spring. It had a 4” trunk but didn’t look anything like a bonsai.

I have had one here for about 10 years and I keep it in a sunny window with temps between 54- 65 F. I've repotted it in early spring and in summer. Didn't seem to mind either time. This is a ROR that is 5 years old.

You mostly have a watering issue. They like water and you live in a dry area. Repotting while the tree is stressed is not a good idea. Mine gets watered daily (even in winter) although it's in an inorganic APL mix. Yours looks to be in a potting mix with organics which is okay, but...... waiting...

All of my experience is with container grown material. They don’t like having big roots cut off. Small feeder roots are fine to reduce. You’ll probably have better luck with the smaller/younger plants.
