This one is actually not a Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii). It’s a Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) and it is younger - started as part of the 2018 Japanese Black Pine contest here on Bonsai Nut (the seeds I purchased turned out to all be JRP). But it was grown as a shohin and makes for a nice juxtaposition with the three year older shohin JBP.
Pictures are JRP, before and after fall needle pulling. Then the two shohin trees on the bench side by side. I think JRP are great trees, but a bit slower developing than JRP. It’ll be interesting to see this tree three years on to compare them at the same age.
