Jerry Meislik's Ficus Natalensis...now mine.

I would have given almost anything for even a cutting from one of Jerry's trees. He was a hero and a friend for almost 30 years. He was solely responsible for keeping me in bonsai at one point in time at the very beginning. He was a great artist but most of all a great person.

... you don't own any of his material? 🤔 I thought you had.

I don't tend to do cuttings... but, since you are a good friend. Remind me when the tree's go outside...and I'll think to let something grow out on this one. Try for a cutting...

I pretty much left facebook now deactivated completely so I never heard anything about selling them. So many old friends… it happens when you hang around long enough.

I think Wigert's might still have some of his trees available.

I met Jerry through Jim Smith many years ago down here in Florida. He was a super nice guy and and simply batty about ficus. About 18 months ago, he has gracious enough to send me one of his exposed-root Natalensis for inclusion in the Jim Smith gallery. I've been refining it ever since. It really is quite lovely.

Would love to see it.

View attachment 586122This is the tree as he sent it to me. I've been working on refining it. I'll get a current pic next week.
Appreciate you sharing, nice looking tree. Love the species/cultivar. They develop so quickly too. I know I'm thrilled with the development I've seen on mine.

Jerry offered me a choice of several, but I chose this one because I have the larger cultivar, but not that one with the tiny leaves.

This is the tree s it currently appears. The piece of bamboo is to halt its tendency to list to the left.

That is a cool tree. It is the first ficus I have seen in this style.
Reading this thread was the first I had heard about Jerry's passing. I got a signed copy of his "Ficus- The exotic Bonsai" when he first published it. It is actually sitting next to me as I type this. I refer to it every time I plan to work on my ficus bonsai.

Thank ya kindly...sorry you had to learn about his passing from my post. I remember when the community was told. I couldn't post about it here. It almost made me angry...hearing all the talk of his passing. As, it's hard to be in denile...when it's being discussed. His light shown bright and his name will be remembered revelantly for all he did for bonsai.

A good book indeed! I've one of his books. Not signed. I can't recall which one it is. I believe he had a few out. Glad you can draw from his book inspiration and knowledge.

He and I discussed this tree. Neagari...literati...cascade it's a bit of all those. I've a mad passion for Neagari. Thus my title given here in the group.
