Everybody In

That is a lot of work, but I bet it pays you back with winter blooms. I just sold off my last tree that had to be overwintered inside! So now I did a whole herb garden in that spot. You’ll have to share winter greenery photos Carol!

It is a lot of work. My husband begrudges them being inside, so no help there! But it does cheer me up to have the barbados cherries, bougies, hibiscus etc blooming in the winter when we're stuck inside.

When my Barbados cherry was outside I didn't know how sweet the flowers smelled. I'm happy to have it indoors along with the bougies.

Really, I never thought of smelling them. I have a couple blooming, I'll have to check it out. My orange is also blooming and those flowers smell wonderful.

I am just beginning to clear the garage to bring them in. It will happen the weekend before Christmas.

I still have all of my tropical outside. This year the weather stay mild longer than other years. Will see how long they can stay outside. All tropical will stay out until temp get below 40F.

This year, since separating my growing area from my living quarter’s, I’m running colder temps in my rooms... like 55-62 consistently.

I am getting “fall colors” on my pomegranates that made me check for mites every few days until I completely accepted it. 🤣

Here is my son, Riley’s Pom..

And I actually brought my Trops/Arids/subs/succs in early this year to test the parameters of my cool rooms... so they had an easier, more gradual transition into “winter”.. instead of Wisconsin’s free-fall. 🤣

It's been a warm fall, so I got an extra three weeks for the trops outside. They saw a few high 40's and were fine, but next week lows are dipping into the 30's, so it was time. I forgot what a PITA getting everything set up was. Funny how it doesn't seem like that much outside. I brought in the trees/plants last night and set up the shelves/lights today, ugh. Still don't have quite everything set up. Tomorrow, the hibiscus, gardenias and orange come in. The sun lovers, bougies, BRT's cherries, etc get the southern exposure. The ficus, p.afras, cuttings and other assorted get the eastern exposure. View attachment 405820View attachment 405821
Ugh is right. I hate bringing them in as much as they hate it. I pushed the envelope this year to Oct 31 as we had our first real frost Nov 1. Sounds like your husband is as curmudgeonly about the indoors situation as is my wife, LOL.

With very few exception, my lady sez no tree in da house! I can do whatever I want in the garage. Christmas tree and a few orchids are the exceptions I know. No tropical trees or anything in the house.

She’s on to something.. they don’t WANT to be in there!! They don’t belong in there. 🤣

Like when we sat next to to a family who had brought their 7 year-old to a recent Black Sabbath concert in Tinley Park... He wasn’t havin’ fun... he didn’t want to be there.

🤣🤣🤣

It is easier to beg forgiveness than to seek permission....;)
That only worked in the first 30 years of marriage. In the past decade she heads me off at the pass every time.
"Don't you even think about taking those trees in the house!"

I think I exceeded my lifetime quota a while back.

Pretty sweet having a Gardenia bloom at the end of November. View attachment 410290
Over the summer the local Home Depot had some of these cheap, but I didn't have anywhere to put them. I'm hoping they have them again next summer, but I hear from some that they can be temperamental about their growing conditions. What would you say about that?

I got mine at Lowes. They were my moms favorite. In the summer here, they get full sun and do great, they are thirsty though. I tried to overwinter one last year and it was with the hibiscus near a stained glass window. It didn't make it. This year I put them where they get some benefit from the grow lights and they are thriving. I fertilize once a week with @Leo in N E Illinois fertilizer. Maybe that's the trick ;) Keep in mind, these are not bonsai.
