NN - 10 years challenge

Sorry I'm new, what is the idea behind the plywood?
So that the roots will not dive downward but instead growing out radially. This will give you a flatter root and better nebari. There is a thread on here talking specifically about that - Ebihara maple by Markyscott.

No rules. Just post a tree. The plan is to update the thread annually so we can see the progress.
What??? No rules???? How can there be no rules??? If there’s no rules, how do we know when we’ve broken one? (Too bad Stephen Hawking passed away, maybe he could derive an answer to that one! Lol!!!). Meanwhile, us mere mortals are contemplating the implications of “no rules”! If there’s no rules, can we say we posted a tree, and not really post one? Can we take credit for someone else’s outstanding results? If our tree dies, can we say it didn’t? Oh!!! This is going to cause me to lose sleep!

No rules??? It’s like a @Dav4 tree with no drop branch! A JWP by @Smoke! A post by @sorce that you can actually understand! Oh!!! It’s just too much!!!

<swoon...>

Oh, here’s a “tree”:

Well... it’s actually not a tree. It’s cuttings from Boon’s pink wisteria! But, hey, there’s no “rule” stating it had to be a tree, right??? Right??? Ok, cool!

The wisteria at Boon’s:

It doesn’t look as good this year as it has in past years. It got moved in the muddle of the summer from Boon’s garden in Hayward to his new place in Valley Springs last summer.

I’m hoping to get a few cuttings growing tor my garden!

...what do you mean it got moved?

That thing looks huge! Did they move it with a dump truck? ?

As in dug up, lifted, burlaped, trucked, unburlapped, replanted. I don’t know how they did it this time, but when it was moved from Alemeda to Hayward, they used an engine block hoist. So, this is the SECOND time this tree has moved with Boon! And, it is huge! About 7 feet tall!

Japanese maple started indoors late winter, recently wired

Trident maple started indoors late autumn recently wired

These were my first ever wire jobs and I had to be gentle as to not damage the seedlings so they're kinda sloppy

And some seedlings started from a small leaf parent tree

Good idea i like it!

Sorry I'm new, what is the idea behind the plywood?
The idea is that they will grow and girdle themselves at the hole in the plywood. Eventually they will form a new (flat and radial, so good for bonsai) root system above the board. Then we remove the old roots below the board. This thread inspired this project.
Never done it before personally, so that's just my best laid plans lol. I'll let you know how it turns out, hoping the boards don't rot out before the magic happens.

There's a couple inches of soil, then spagnum. How deep were yours planted?
Probably an inch of soil on top but looks like I can add a bit more. These are already two years in these colander.

I have a thread created for these attributed to @Smoke since he the one show us how it is done.

This thread is going to confuse many people. There are several techniques being discussed using boards and tiles, and these tools can be used in different ways, for different effects. This thread has them all jumbled up!
I don't think so. People won't be confused. Threads like this pique their interest and they will search to get the details in more specific threads or other sources. At least that what happens to me all the time in Bonsai Nut.

Am not so concern about technique in this one. You do whatever techniques you want with your trees then show us what they look like each year at the start of Spring. You are welcome to show your techniques and progress as often as you would like.

Is that a rule? I’m so confused! Lol!!!

Ok, I’m done! My wisteria cuttings are still alive!

Amur maple volunteer from my neighbourhood, collected last weekend. Can’t quite locate the parent tree. Happy with the number of buds on the lower trunk.
