Choosing the right pot

Sorry. I typed too fast...Nevertheless, using an intermediate pot instead of jumping from an initial training pot to a commissioned pot is very much a part of my thought processes when it comes to buying containers for trees.

Agreed i belive this tree is still in the japanese pot the original owner had it in it has a japanese stamp on the bottom.

I was just going to keep it in this but i may put it into a grow box to aid its progression in a year or so i will see what corrin says when it has its anual review with him in october

I was wondering why you needed the group's opinion if you have Corrin as a teacher / advisor,
I remember some years ago Corrin also trained at Mr. Valavanis's place.

We are just hobbyists.

Might be a bit rude to Corrin ?
Good Day

Sorry what might be a bit rude?
I dont understand.
You think asking this groups opinions and methods on how to choose a pot would be offensive to corrin?

Corrin is a professional, and his opinion would carry more weight.
We are hobbyist.
Since he is working with you on the tree -------- too many cooks spoil the broth.

Might create more confusion than help.

I understand that i do.

I used that tree not to get advice on its future pot but to asses how people decide and evaluate i just used that tree so people had someting to go off and show me there ways.
I suppose i should not have put an example in this thread when i created it lol its just taking away from the question i was trying to ask.

Or maybe i should have used a tree from the internet as the example as it does not matter.

i think your just getting a little carried away abit lol.
I dont think corrin will mind me getting advice or gaining knowledge afterall i can only spend so much time a year at the nursery.

Sorry if there was any confusion.

I would be very very surprised if Corrin (or any other "bonsai master worth his/her salt) is insulted by the tree's owner looking around for a container for their tree. In fact, I'd bet he (and they) would encourage learning more about the subject and expanding understanding of how others choose containers. It is not a cut and dry "this is the best pot for the tree" kind of thing. It is wildly subjective, like choosing a tie that is appropriate for a suit or shirt. There many possibilities, none of them is the "one and only."

Thats right only trying to broaden my skill sets and knowledge

Then the answer is simple ----------------

When the thinking shifts from ------- need more foliage here, a bend more here, roots need to look stronger etc.

To ----------- wow, now that is beautiful, so satisfying [ and then realizing an hour has passed ]

You say it's this tall, and wide, the trunk has a diameter of and I need a depth of x to keep the tree healthy,
hmm, perhaps an ochre with some red brown, and the tree has so much presence, maybe a simple
shape and so the conversation turned as the sun went down.AND many fantasies were heard ..............

Then you know to take time and find a pot.

Agreed

I enjoy thinking exercises like this and I'm glad you shared.

Here is another question on the matter could you get away with putting a larch in a light coloured pot as the larch has alot of colour changes throughout the year.
Example

This larch needs a morw suitable pot ans i have this.

I think because of the flash on the camara the blue in the first pic above looks a lot darker than it actually is and the other side pic 2 has alot less blue in it aswell.

But i think the yellow/cream of the pot would work in the tree in spring and fall.
Plus the size is alot better on the perposed pot.

If it's horticulturally sound....

See it in it!

Who's the Potter?
That's swell!

Sorce

It was made by mark jones from Walsall ceramics here in the uk i has it decommissioned for another tree only to find the size ever so slightly too big but yeah i think it will work

I’d go for an unglazed pot on the larch. The Walsall is nice but I’d use it for something else. You probably know this, but the time to do it is when the buds get that ‘golden glow’ in late winter/early spring, before they start showing green.

Any reason why you think a larch is more suited to an unglazed pot?
Just wondering your reasoning thats all.

Personally i think a larch shows alot of characteristics just like any deciduous tree and cream/yellow colour could match the spring/fall colours of the tree so it could work i know its not conventional but still ot could work
