I like that! I happen to be in the middle of digging a 4-5ft deep ditch along side my house to the street. (40ft)
Could easily leave a bit along the foundation/basement for something like this. Thanks. Love this site.

And I also carried a couple more in. 25f and 50mph winds. Chance of snow. I have flowers and buds... crazy weather.

Yup.Be sure to leave a gravel bottom on the dirt. That way warmth can radiate up through from the earth. And can also put a garden hose in it a couple days before you put trees away and the mud under the stones keeps humidity high and will barely need water all winter.I only had to use a squirt bottle twice all winter.

Had to repot maples and crape myrtles this weekend before they fully leafed out and now I have no choice but to do the shuffle.

Sometimes California seems like the only the place Mother Nature wants people in the U.S. To do bonsai..

Here's to Due diligence!

27 degrees last night and 50mph winds, brought most inside (forgot my poor azalea) and woke up to a coating of snow. We've had a lot of sunny and 70s. Flowers blooming and cold forecast all week. Challenging...

I can't make heads or tails out of the freaking forecast. It's all over the place.

I thought I was going to leave the trees out last night, as three forecasts said it would stay in the 40s. Turned on the TV news last night and they said there was a freeze warning for the county. Moved everything in. This morning it was 45 f. Moved everything back out. Freeze warning tonight and tomorrow night. Everything back inside for two days. Moderate temps on Wed. night and Thursday and maybe Friday. Saturday night 32...Jeez I'm tired.

At least there's no freaking snow. Not unheard of for April here, though. We got 60 mph wind gusts on Saturday night. I brought most of my smaller trees in to avoid flying debris--including trees becoming flying debris (which I also do when we get the occasional hurricane).

It DID snow in the Carribean on March 31 though

Had a freeze warning here last night but I didnt get a chance to put my pines and junipers back in. Fortunately it only went down to 33 degrees at my house.
Predicting 26 tonight and 17 tomorrow night with more freeze warnings again. Raining here today possibly switching to wintery mix by the end of the day.
Stayed home from work this morning to get the damn trees back in the cold frame. Took about an hour to get them all put away again and I was soaking wet by the time I was done and my back is killing me.

My poor maples are almost all leafed out and still sitting in the garage. I had one day where it wasnt too windy and/or cold to put them out.

F*** work at this point. Took the rest of the day off. Showered and now snuggling up to my heating pad.
Damn weather.....gona be the death of me

Thanks for the warning. I knew about it already because I tend to watch the weather like a hawk around this time of year.

I agree @ can we please keep the global warming fight out of the thread. It isnt needed.

We got about 4" of snow and the temp as I type is sitting at 24 F. I believe this is mother nature saying "time to move out of western NY", but unfortunately we won't be able to do that for at least a few years.

For those of you a bit further south (Long Island, Virginia...paradox and rockm) - I don't know where you are getting your forecasts from, but for you guys the coldest weather is likely to be tonight through tomorrow night, then a warm up, then another possibly stronger cold shot over the upcoming weekend. Definitely plan for that one. I have no idea how cold it might get in your backyards but if you have leafed out plants, those are the danger times.

Yep. that's what I've seen. The problem for me is that when they predict 35 degrees or so. That can mean I get a frost or nothing at all, depending a few things. It's a borderline forecast. I could leave stuff outside or bring it in. I tend to err on the side of "bring it in" in those situations.

Some of the forecasts in the DMV (District Maryland Va.) tend to mix crap together and this area is a borderline between Southern and Northern weather. We get the worst of both at times. They lump Va. weather in with Baltimore and vice versa. Can be hard sometimes to sort it out immediately.

Everything I have is fully leafed out, has been for a week or more. A shallow freeze won't kill things outright, but can wind up killing large portions of the tree. Anything below 31 for an hour will kill leafed-out deciduous trees in pots. Won't hurt conifers though.

I've posted elsewhere that my experience has been somewhat different. I've found that most of the hardy species will tolerate temps down to 28 or 29 briefly (an hour or two) without significant damage when they're leafed out or in the process of leafing out. I wouldn't chance it with a prized specimen, but there have been some nights where it was just not possible to bring everything in and the min thermometer got down to about 28. Some leaves damaged but not extensive. Wonder what the explanation is for our different observations!
