Where Oh Where has our BT Gone

I'm not too worried about it. This is actually quite a small site. Even BT is a very small site for an Internet forum. Now THIS is a big forum :)

I prefer quality over quantity. In the case of bonsai, one thorough, well-documented thread can be worth (to me) the entire cost to host this site for a month.
Wow that site is massive!!

Hi Irene!
Matt just wrote, and he is still in the midst of the move and
changing the server. They hit some glitches with some of the old
software, sounds like... the gallery, and stuff like that. So he has to
buy new licenses and upgrade, and all sorts of things, but it's looking
better than it was last week. There will be new features, and we will
lose some old features, but some of the upgrades will be beneficial
overall. So, no date yet, but he is making progress.

Jeremy do you have further information?

Buy new licenses? Huh?

Buy new licenses? Huh?

Some software licenses have a time factor associated with them. For example, the BonsaiNut vBulletin license is a perpetual use license (even once expired), but I need an active license for support or software updates. Some apps or plug-ins work similarly. Sometimes if you have let your site get out of date, updating one part of the site requires you to update or even replace another part of the site. This sounds like what is happening with BT - it is not a simple sever move, but a server move combined with rebuilding the site with new (or updated) software. Sounds like some of the site is being replaced, so they will lose some functionality based on obsolete technology, but replace it with newer stuff. My hope - their site will look awesome and it will force me to get off my butt and improve this site as well. :)

It should be a simple task to put up a simple "placeholder" home page that informs us about the status and progress. If I were the webmaster, that's what I would do given the level of interest.

Thanks Bnut, I guess I am too used to free programs and a technical wizard that worries about that stuff ;)

Yes, google rankings do not measure size, just the ranking of the site.
So true Will, the real test is the alexa ranking, much more powerful than that google deal.
Look at the traffic rank (these numbers are out of ALL public websites on the internet)

http://alexa.com/siteinfo/bonsainut.com = 5,256,162
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/bonsaitalk.com = 553,223
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/knowledgeofbonsai.org = 854,307
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/artofbonsai.org = 549,694
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/bonsaisite.com = 249,680
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/index.php = 780

The order is about what I thought. It is impossible to rank IBC, as they use iforummotion and searching their URL only brings up iforummotion.

What did suprise me was just how international AoB and KoB are, not only with visitors from other countries, but also with the rankings in other countries.

Here is the list again, in order from most active to least active

http://alexa.com/siteinfo/http:/...um/index.php = 780
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/bonsaisite.com = 249,680
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/bonsainut.com = 5,256,162
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/artofbonsai.org = 549,694
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/bonsaitalk.com = 553,223
http://alexa.com/siteinfo/knowledgeofbonsai.org = 854,307

Only two of the bonsai sites (AoB and KoB) have gained in global internet visitor percentage over the last three months, the others have all declined?

Good info as usual Paul, Thanks. I guess that shoots a huge hole in some of the theories presented about active sites and busy ones.

I can't really speak to the rankings, but the percentages are way off. Since this site has launched we haven't had a single month where traffic hasn't grown.

Bnut's ranking is better than all but one of the popular sites, which is very good.

Will

Oh, the rank there is based on average number of visitors and page views, that seems realistic.

My bad, so the order of rankings from best to worst is:

Bsite
AoB
Btalk
KoB
Bnut

Unrelated.....

On google, searching for the word "bonsai"

Bsite is #2 on the 1st page
AoB is #1 on the 3rd page
Btalk is #4 on the 4th page
KoB is #4 on the 5th page
IBC is #7 on the 11th page
I could not find Bnut on the first 20 pages

I really felt Bnut would be ranked much higher?

Alexa is not a very good benchmark for anything really. The results can be manipulated and it creates the ranking from visitors who are using the Alexa plugin or browser bar. I've installed the bar before and all my personal sites jumped in traffic soon after. If you use Google Analytics for stats tracking, then you can share and compare with other sites in your genre. This may be as close as you get get without talking to the owners and getting stats for each site individually.

In these times, you never know if or when or because of what you will be banned. Terrible times...
I have been banned from the Bonsai Site Forums today

Marc it looks like they have erased ALL of your old posts !!! At least I couldn't find any that used to be in threads I started. Why did you get banned ?

According to Vance, it was probably the arabs that had something to do with it.......

Ciao,

It appears that you have been erased from history at that other site. What's up with that ?

Yes, you have been scrubbed Marc. What on Earth did you do ? The only trace left of you is where another post refers to your post. Kind of creepy.....
