I have a collection of procumbens that I have been styling for a few years. The inner leaves are all brown but the tips look healthy. They are planted in a combination of pumice, lava, and akadama. I am soliciting opinions from the cognoscenti if they are okay. They stay out all year and get full afternoon sun. Comments on the styling are also appreciated.

It would help if they can be referred to as #1,#2, and #3 from left to right of the picture on the bench. Thank you, in advance.

Styling I would definitely say #3. Nice trunk line and potential.

The pictures are a bit unclear.
When was it heavily bended and styled?
To much or not enough water. Hard to tell from pictures.

The soil seems fine to me.

Dense parts of the tree wil naturally shed weak parts with a lack of sun and air. Trimming for aeration will stimulate the interior growth.

Only afternoon sun is not ideal. It needs the morning sun as well.

Thank you. Yes I need a better phone. I will move that bench to a new location with more morning sun. #3 was bent about 3 years ago. #2 was just a lucky buy and that’s the result of pruning. #1 wasn’t styled too much as some people in my household like it that way.

#2 might be pruned a bit to hard and having stress because of that.

I don’t know of you have seen and followed the advice of Milton Chang video’s? Not the best way to go.
To much actions stress the trees.

Junipers will take a while to show the results of actions taken.

I find Mr Changs approach too radical. I prefer the Herron’s videos.

For what my 2 cents are worth, it looks to me like not enough light and maybe too much water. Probably hard to overwater with that mix, but it will slow down growth. Agree with @NeedlesAndLeaves, careful with aggressive pruning at the wrong time of year with these guys. Inner shaded growth will naturally die back if not trimmed....in my experience
