We're in a dry spell here. Watering 3x/day and grass starting to go dormant.

A little valley fog settlin' in.
Sorry I wished we'd stop hogging all the rain.

Been watching that in the news.
Wondered how many bonsai was lost to the Milwaukee floods, and thinking about the Wisconsin bonsai club we met at the Nationals in Rochester.

We've reached 94F so far this evening as we're in the end of another heat wave.
Supposed to rain tomorrow, then another heat wave.
Humidity @6 pm 58%, earlier was 49% for the minimum today.
So far no disease to write home about.

Ironically... I was whining about temps and lack of rain...

And then the temps dropped 20 degrees and we have had 10 days straight of rain. It's supposed to end tomorrow... but I've got my eyes on that potential hurricane.

Is the Biltmore open?
We went for Christmas 2023 I think.

The Biltmore itself was unaffected by hurricane Helene. Some of the grounds were damaged (including the entrance gates) but I think the damage was at least addressable for visitors. In other words, it might take years for some of the landscaping to mature, but cleaning up, removing debris, and replanting areas that needed replanting are all done.

We were up in Black Mountain in June for the bonsai exhibition at the NC Arboretum, and though there were several sections of roads (back in the mountains) that were single lane and you had to deal with traffic signals, it wasn't a big deal. Certainly Black Mountain and Asheville were open. The Arts District in Asheville (the area that fronted the river) is under extensive rebuilding, but Asheville itself is fine.

Yes i remember the gates.
The McDonald's across the street had a grand piano inside.
20211205_224138.jpg20211205_224159.jpg Pretty snazzy for a McDonald's. Was 2021 during covid. Pretty sure this area was wiped out from what I saw in the news.

Your high temps are about what we are seeing here... but your low temps are 10-15 degrees F cooler. We have been having a tropical summer - with a long run of nights that did not get below 70F (about 7 weeks straight).
two weeks ago those lows were our highs... swapping sweaters and jeans out for t-shirts and shorts.

The Milwaukee Bonsai Society had a lot of trees on display at the Wisconsin state fair which flooded pretty badly, but thankfully the building the trees were in wasn't badly affected and the trees were all okay. I haven't received any emails of club members needing support yet but they will probably come soon.

I'm grateful my neighborhood is one of the highest spots in the city

In another set of totals I saw it said Menomonee Falls got 14 inches. Milwaukee Tool had three of our buildings there shut down due to power outages and flood damage. That business park was built on a swamp though.

95F / 35C today and tomorrow.
Our houses are built to retain heat in winter, which means my bedroom will be 33C / 91F throughout the night. I feel sorry for my pet snake, the lights are off and she has plenty of water but I can't make it better for it. It usually is very docile but with this heat the aggression level shoots through the roof and it jumps teeth first against the glass at any movement inside the room.

It's so hot that bugs now form small static clouds near the apexes of trees, just to catch some of that evaporating coolth. Coolness? Chill? Why can warmth be th and coolth canth?

What kind of snake?

Because...
...English. Ask the Brits, they invented this nutty language.

Finally a Summer thunderstorm(s) last night.

From Lawrence county Ohio just across the river to here received 4-6" of rain between 7:30 pm and 2 am (6.5 hours) in spots. I got 1.83"
A bolder fell onto Rt 60 just a few moments behind us on our way home from church.

The lightening never really stopped which was a great light show though not continuous.
The windows were rattlin with the thunder most of the time.
Walnut trees and others had been losing leaves pre fall despite the wet Spring. No doubt due to the abnormally hot Summer.
