I have a jwp that I am styling. There are some small shoots that I will be removing, but I thought that this may be a good opportunity to use those shoots as scion grafts rather than waste them.

Is early July a bad time to try scion grafting on JWP? Has anyone done it at this time of the year with success?

Located in Massachusetts, zone 6b.

Thanks!

Have been taught grafting JBP after decandling is ok. Don’t know about single flush JWP

Might give it a try and see how it goes.

Otherwise, the only hitch will be shorter recovery time. So the tree may need to be protected from freezing this year.

For sure.

That’s what I thought about JBP, but a professional who grafts an awful lot of trees came up and taught a couple grafting classes here and that was a direct quote…. The downside is one has to be really quick when positioning the graft as the sap is flowing hard.

Of course wouldn’t put the tree in full sun.

Thanks! I might try it since I don't have much to lose. I was tossing the clippings anyway. Maybe I'll get lucky.

I was also told grafting pines should be Spring but I did a demo for someone mid Summer expecting it to fail. Got 100% with those few Summer JBP grafts so it is possible.

My thought also. By trying new things we can sometimes open up new possibilities. Nothing to lose and lots to gain.
