Sharing one of my oaks that I collected in 2020. I believe it’s a hybrid of Quercus buckleyi and Quercus marilandica. I’m hoping to repot it into a bonsai container this coming spring. Share some pot ideas you think would work for the tree. Thanks!

Love this tree. I wonder if you've given any thought to how to differetiate the two trunks. Currently, they're rather similar in scale.

I've never tried to air layer an oak, but I'd be tempted to try on the top of that straight (right) trunk, then get rid of the right trunk altogether. The left trunk is great. The ramrod straight right trunk doesn't seem to fit.

I wonder if there's an angle change that would improve the right trunk's movement and also get the two trunks off of the same plane to give the composition more depth (orienting one trunk closer to the viewer and pushing the second trunk to the back)

I plan to angle it so that the left trunk is slightly taller than the right trunk. I did some root work yesterday but didn’t get a picture. It wasn’t ready for a bonsai pot yet and I didn’t have one large enough anyways lol.

That’s the plan. Planning to elevate the left trunk

Oaks refuse to air layer.

Yeah, could be a futile exercise. I've heard that roots will only develop from root tissue. But there's a lot of variability in US oaks and how they respond. Some day I'll try coast live oak and valley oak to see what happens.

Please do. It would be great news if you found a method that worked.
