Making chopsticks

That's so funny...I had a conversation with the owner about 8 months ago and I explained what I was looking for in both pliers and wire cutters and then his baby started crying and I told him I'd get back to him...They're less than an hour and Screen Shot 2022-08-03 at 11.33.45 AM.pnga half away but the 5' size would be great for me. You showed the 7' size I think. That one would be a little long for me but it's exactly what I've been looking for.

I've had this saved in a folder for so long I don't remember where it came from. It's the best option I've found for the kind of pliers I want but now I don't remember where it came from. Thanks for pointing out those cutters. I'm going to order them.

I have an unlimited free supply of bamboo around me but the thought of making my own bonsai chopstick have never crossed my mind lol.

I posted because I thought the 28 minute video about making chopsticks was funny, or at least worth a chuckle or two. TWENTY EIGHT MINUTES OF CHOPSTICK MAKING??? C'mon, that's funny.
100% objectively funny!

I used takeout chopsticks for years. But after using real ones at the Huntington, I went and got some very cheap construction bamboo and made my own Ryan-style. They are awesome, especially for large tree repots. Bamboo with the hard side also lasts longer as tie downs in the pots than takeout chopsticks.

I lived in China and they've built and are building the tallest high rises I've ever seen. The only scaffolding they use is made of bamboo. It's freaky to see. 'Real' bamboo is really hard. Take-out chopsticks will snap like a twig.

A 28 minute video of chopstick making is exactly 28 minutes too long. I haven't seen it and don't intend to but just imagining a 28 minute video of it is funny.

These are pretty nifty too

Same in my country of Vietnam.

I wonder about making our own akadama.

We dont need to make our own chopsticks, we are not in that much trouble, he should rather put his efforts into designing a biodegradable straw that doesn't biodegrade before i've finished my farking drink

A local club member is a Ryan fan from way back. Gave me one of these fancy chopsticks at my first club meeting, then made me 3 more in 5 minutes last time I was at his place. (A pair of root cutters and sandpaper is really all you need)

I was skeptical at first, too. I already had chopsticks.
Anyways, the thicker node end and general thickness and rectangular shape make these much more pleasant to hold for a longer time. If you're teasing roots or getting clay/mud soil out of the root ball of a nursery tree, I get hand cramps holding a takeout chopstick that long.
Anyways, just my 2cents. Is the video over the top, and Ryan's verbiage a little unnecessary, sure!
You don't have to, but I'll keep using these chopsticks!

I use the bonsai jack chopsticks for eating roast nuts. Great training of fine motor skills and patience.

Today I will sit down and watch the entire video, with a bag of peanuts. A race of sorts.

My teacher(not Ryan) taught us to make chopsticks from bamboo also, only took a couple minutes, they work infinitely better than restaurant ones.

I've made different thicknesses and lengths, long ones work great for trees with low branches and dense canopies.

I bought a cheap pack of 3 1-1/2" round x 5 ' long at my local garden center and have enough to last forever.

You can buy a "stick" of 6" diameter bamboo and 6-12' for about $125-$179 online... not cheap on this side of the pond.

Give florist supply shops a try...

The prices here on line. Cheaper in store.

The thing that I find most amusing about all this, is the parallel to the griping that used to be leveled at the "Boonies". Which now is pretty much regarded as what always was good information coming from that teacher and the students of. Heck there is even soil composition named after Boon now with no derision included.

The more things change the more they stay the same....LOL.

My question is will the chopsticks be named Neelies? Or perhaps the students of are Ryanists??? 😁

My vote is on the choice closest to Whoa Nelly!

Why is it necessary to use only bamboo and not any other hardwood to make chopstics?

It's not necessary to use only bamboo for chopsticks. You can use whatever wood you want. Chopsticks are just easy to get (unless you are making your own), cheap and durable.
