Yesterday I made a day trip to my grandmother's property to collect some trees, I unfortunately only walked out with one youngin bjt that's okay by me. This is a pinus monophylla or the single needle pinion and it is my favorite coniferous tree period. I've had good luck with fall collection in the past so I figured why not, it'll spend the winter in my cold house.

It looks like it will be a fun little tree to work with. What is your substrate? It looks very water retentive.

It's in native soil and pumice, I never bareroot in fall. I collect in fall give the entire next growing season to recover then I bareroot and repot the next spring.

How late in the fall can i collect material like this?

@Cypress187 It depends on the climate and the aftercare. In y instance I know this is a very hardy species in my climate it will be put into my coldframe and even then we don't get much colder then 15°f here in the winter so it doesn't need a heat matt or anything since I got such a good root ball.

Are you sure that's not a douglas fir tree? The only monophylla I've seen were bigger but this one doesn't look the same.

You know you may be right, I had a weird hunch because this one has different needles then mine but collected from same area.

So I did a bit of research and I guess in the same area is the white fir so I'm about positive that's what this one is.

They don't look like pine buds / growth. I wish their were fir trees near me.
