...and they leave a huge pile of them in your driveway.
19 of them to be exact. All were dug from a pond construction site today and left bare root for me here. It pays to have a neighbor with a pond company :)

There are about 10 that have thicker single trunks and the rest are the typical barberry clumps.
They definitely appear to be a dwarf variety but I'm not sure which.

When it rains it pours!

I've got them soaking right now, a storm stopped any chance of potting tonight but tomorrow I'm going to plant/prune them down.

If anyone doesn't mind chancing shipping I'll gladly ship one out if the shipping is covered.. My wife would love to see some of them go :D

MY STYLE is to trim trees as far back as I have/need to. Balance root with the top. It is not for everyone but just sharing in case you want to try it (on some).

Good luck!

I've had good luck chopping barberry right back to the trunk but am hesitant to do so on all of them this late in the year. I'm definitely going to take the chance on some of the more oddball ones just to see what I can get away with. Thanks for the input man!

Depending on the shipping cost, I think I'd be interested if the offer stands.

I'm going to pot them up tonight, once they're reduced and put in a small pot they shouldn't be too bad to ship, 20-30 maybe. I'll pm you photos later tonight.

ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch

repeat...

man, I have some landscape ones, and can't even imagine how many times you've been stuck by now just moving those around! Much less trimming and potting.

They look great, but OUCH!!!

You'd be surprised. These dwarf ones seem to take on smaller thorns in addition to their small foliage. I did get some nicks here and there but the one thorn I had to pick out of my finger was only about 1/8" long.

Leather gloves for repotting just to be safe :)

I'm having some trouble sending pm's for some reason. If you didn't get it, please pm me. Very generous offer!

raydomz,

I think it almost goes without saying that you need to mention how much you like naturally dwarfed eastern white cedar or American larch or something and see what the man comes up with.

Good luck with the barberry!

Regards,
Martin

lol, funny you should say that Martin. I've been told about a nice bog up in the northern part of our state that I am going to check out in 2 weeks. I'm told there will be larch :) same guy.
