Now that my Yaupons have been well established for a couple of years in their pots, it's time for me to simplify the designs to push growth where it will help the trees' designs. For this holly, I'm struggling with the apex. It's got sort of a double apex going on. I can't decide if I should chop the higher apex to lower the overall height of the tree (picture #2). Doing so will leave a big chop scar - maybe about 2" across. Yaupons will rot quick, so I'm afraid this will compromise the tree in the long run.
Alternatively. I could chop back the lower apex so the canopy isn't so crowded. This would leave one of two smaller branches that could be wired more laterally (picture #3).
Any advice would be helpful!!
