Xmas tree bonsai

So a few years back Bob Pressler owner of the kimura bonsai nursery told his class not to buy xmas trees for bonsai because the needles of the italian stone pine get too long after i suggested everyone to do so...

Well im a bit hard at hearing so i went out and made some and after about 3 years i got this. (needles are beautifully small!)

Yes at times i think we all try weird material but its worth the challenge.

Nice job Mike, the ones in the first post are very nice, the latter ones look like they are on the way to nice pieces. Shame on you, as you are also breaking the rules of Bonsai!! Afterall we all know its an old man's hobby.

When i read the title of this thread i thought bonsai with christmas decorations which i thought would be a bit crass. I did think wether it was a good idea to try and use old christmas tree's last year when i saw how many live ones people threw in the bin. I might collect some of them this year even if it is only for next years christmas tree.

But there is a difference between pot grown and grubbed up and stuffed into a pot a month or so before the holidays.

yes there is a difference the first ones i showed i had to work on for two years before i even potted them up.

Pruning immature foliage on an X Christmas pine

I bought an X Christmas pine at a garage sale and want to make it into a Bonsai. It has straggly long branches of immature needles and a nice fat trunk. Don't know what variety it is. Where, when and how far back should I prune these branches????

Hi Nancy and welcome to Bnut forum. You will want to start your own thread about your tree. That way you can have an intact thread for your progress on it.

If you could post some photos of your tree, we can help id it, as well as give you correct advice. There is no blanket advice about where and when to cut back.
