Wow …Jan. And 15 days above 40f….approaching 60f on a few.

Yeah, this may end up being problematic :). The temperatures in my cold room went from the upper 20s Fahrenheit two days ago to mid 40s Fahrenheit right now… And that is actually 10° cooler than the current outside temperature. I’ll be opening up the windows tonight in the hopes that it falls into the 30s. If I can’t get the temperatures to fall back below 40 in the next couple of days, I won’t be happy.

Yeah looking at kissing 60 throughout the next 10 days. My greenhouse is north facing and has been staying 2-3 degrees above external temperatures. Wondering if I should move forward with my plans to install a heater/thermostat this year instead of over the summer

Yeah, I don't really know what to do with my trees. A week ago we dipped into the negatives. Because of that, I moved everything into the garage. Now, I don't know if it's better to put them back out (the ones that were applicable) or leave them in. I guess I'm concerned about the temp fluctuating but I suppose inside or out that will happen regardless. Also, I am not particularly a fan of "winter".

You want to keep them cold enough to maintain dormancy. A week of temperatures consistently over 40 F might allow some to break dormancy. And if you’re going to have a prolonged warm-up, I’d put the trees where they are going to stay the coldest during that warm up.

I feel like it's slightly warmer in the garage. I know wind is the enemy in winter but it's the best shot I have of getting some additional cold.

I did some work in the garden today. Even with the cold of the last week, I see a difference in the buds of a most of my deciduous trees. With high temps for the next two weeks forecast to be in the 50's or greater, I have a feeling that I'll be doing a lot of shuffling in February and March.

Perhaps simply open the garage door? Best of both worlds, they are kept in the shade and you don’t have to move them!

cheers

Am doomed!

keep your trees in a area that doesn’t get a lot of sun like the back of your house or behind a structure that gets the most shade

I kept hearing in fall it would be a warmer winter due to La Niña. But it wasn’t supposed to affect the north near Canada as much if I remember. Other than that bomb cyclone it has been warmer then usual. So the meteorologist’s have been pretty right.

It’s interesting how my tridents and Japanese maples were fine with low 40s for dormancy in SoCal, but they wouldn’t drop their leaves until late Dec. and would push in early to mid-March. I’m hoping they aren’t on that 3 month cycle, since that would be middle Feb. which is still avg lows of 25F in my new 6b locale!

Sometimes I think the genetics of the trees have it……..as far as poppin’ buds in a warm spell……especially January.

I mean how many thousands or millions of years???
