Today's work included a california juniper collected by Ben Oki. I didn't ask for specific history of the tree, only knowing it came into my teacher's collection about a year and a half ago, where he got it from his uncle who had purchased it from Mr. Oki. There's a magazine/album from the late 80s that details the tree. I'll ask my teacher for a photo of the album when I visit again next week or if anyone happens to know about the tree, please post a photo.
The foliage and roots were relatively sparce even after a year of heavy fertilizing. Only about 15 percent of the foliage and less than 5 percent of roots were removed. I cleaned up the live vein, we wired primaries, and put it in better soil. Hopefully the tree will push out more growth this season for next year's work. It was an honor to have worked on such a beautiful tree. I'll post updates of the tree as it progresses.
