I bought this tree in 2016 or 2017 from @Eric Group who was selling it on behalf of @johng. This is the 1st pic I took of it in 2017.

I decided to ground layer the tree to try to improve the base. I started that in 2018. I mostly just let the foliage grow wild to help get the roots going.

In 2019 I separated the layer and chopped the trunk.

In 2020 it went into a smaller pot and I cut back the leaders

This is the only pic I took of the tree in 2021. I'm keeping the roots buried still so the base doesn't look very different. In time, it should be better.

Thanks! I'm going to have to cut the canopy back hard to get more taper and movement in the branches. But it's coming along.

Pretty tree. It looks like a shohin, but you probably would have said so if it was.
It looks like it has developed good ramification thus far. I know it's still very young.

Thanks! It's pretty close to shohin size - maybe just slightly taller right now.
Growing out the canopy causes the branches to get thicker but grow mostly straight. Cutting it back hard creates new, thinner growth and a change in direction. So you get taper and movement.

I like them quite a bit. They seem to develop fast, get nice and twiggy and the leaves reduce very well. I think it's a very underrated native species.
