I had the luck of coming across a pretty rare tree last year and jumped at the chance for under 80 bucks. I knew about the this Atlantic Cedar cultivar from being on the Facebook auctions and how fast they quickly got sold whenever Bill or anyone else placed one up for sell. When I put it on the counter to pay the owner looked at me like he may have missed marked the price but because i was a new customer he let me have it for the listed price but saying he wished he had made some cuttings before he sold the last one he had in stock. I Have only found one article about this species so I would love to see other examples of what I've been growing for almost a year now. I've learned that they definitely back bud unlike Hinoki Cyprus and are pretty tuff little trees as they Survived. my zone 6 winter no problems at all. I did a slip pot repotting this winter into a much larger pot from a rather small plastic nursery pot and have fed it heavily since this spring. I want the tree to be much bigger then it is now because I saw one Bill had that sold for over 5k or at least that was his asking price,,,but trust me i an't no Bill Valavanis lol...seen ive been feeding it it has exploded with new growth with all the extra room for the roots to run. It needs a restyling very soon and because of all the growth had to remove all the wire I put on this winter before it began to cut into the bark. All the branches have set from what I can tell so far because none of the branches have bounced back as of yet. At my local nursery I did notice a regular Atlantic cedar that had a massive base on it and was very tempted to take it home because of the back budding potential. So I'm including pictures of my tree and anyone else who has experience or has links to other posts about this interesting Species please feel free to comment and post pictures as well. I'm also interested in see regular Atlantic cedar bonsai as im sure i could learn a lot about what i have from what information that's out there on them as well.I don't believe in private posts on a forum page or time sensitivity especially when it comes to bonsai..
it takes to long to develop something to worry about that. All information it welcome because of20240510_070744.jpgf the limited amount of information about these tree's.

nice pick up.
Thanks.. I'm a little disappointed no one else has replied to this thread or posted any pictures of Atlantic cedars: "valavanis" or any regular Atlantic Cedars. Could they be that rare??

Love the tree. Never heard of it before. New rabbit hole unlocked.

New one on me but thats the problem with common names

Any chance this might be Eastern red cedar?

Hmm there is a plant known as Atlantic white cedar.

So there is no chance this is an eastern red cedar this is not a juniper. The latin name is Chamaecyparis thyoides) or Atlantic white cedar. Valavanis as a young man spotted the witch is broom and on an Atlantic white cedar and started to propagate the cultivar in the 70s or 80s i believe. He started to sell the little trees to local Nursery and to his surprise they named it after him..the foliage is very much like the cultivar redstar but much more finer and softer. It creates an almost perfect image of a tree from 50 feet away in Miniature and I would love to have 10 more for a group planting. It's foliage is very Feathery and is a pleasure and very pleasant to touch. I haven't seen a bug or pest on it yet and only seen very little dead bits here and there throughout the Canopy mass. I tell you it's amazing!!!

I have a different cultivar of chamaecyparis thyoides, the "red star" . It's by large my favorite species. A single specimen (6€) has given me this :

I also have the "top point" cultivar, but I'm not very fond of it.
I think I have seen a post with your single planting of the redstar tree. Or I may have seen a reply from a post that you showed your tree. I really like the forest planting a lot. I wish I could find more Atlantic cedar be it valavanis or redstar. I'm very tempted to pick up a very large Atlantic white cedar I found at my local nursery. They had three,,, all with amazing bases but all Over feet tall and for 70 dollars each. The redstar looks almost like the valavanis cultivar;, how tall are the single specimen and the forest?

Yeah I'm not as excited about the top point cultivar but I definitely think in a forest planting it could be used effectively.. kinda looks like eastern red cedar but a little fuller and probably less prickly to touch.

I have this same variety of tree. Grows great for me. I can get a photo later if anyone wants one.

I'm posting some pictures of the foliage up close so people can get a better idea of how it looks. I'm going to put a video as well if it works,, and also wondering why no one uses video on here.20240513_154715.jpg20240513_154800.jpg20240513_154850.jpg20240513_155027.jpg

Hell yea let's see! How long have you owned it and how did you come across the tree? I was worried no body had one that was a member on here.. funny story I bought two other trees before that thinking it was a valavanis cedar before got the one in this post. It ended up being a sawara cypress and the other a tuskumo sawara cypress. Very similar foliage... I'm not made cuzz they both turned out to be cool little tree's as well.

I'm thinking I'm going to wait till the tree stops pushing growth tii I restyle the tree again.. I'm very pleased with it so far.. I can't wait to get some nice cuttings from the tree because it looks like it grows fairly quickly unless some dorf varieties. Wonder how long it will take to get a little forest from cuttings. I've already taken one or two small cuttings ill post their progress on this thread too

I bet if you gave the guy who owned the nursery you got it from a couple of cuttings it would make his day.

Please show your tree you got me all in Suspense for weeks heheheh.. I just picked up a new chamaecyparis thyoides btw

So I picked up a new chamaecyparis thyroides not a valavanis Cyprus but the ccultivars name is top point. It has both Mature and immature foliage types growing on one tree but mostly the Mature scale foliage on mine. I'm having a bit of a time styling this one because it's so freaking big. The trunk is almost Two and a half inches and the root spread is over five inches. It has a bit of a secondary trunk that I want to use in the design. Since this are known to back bud I'm not super worried about Filling out more because the inside of the branches are fairly bare. I feel like maybe is should look to the trees growing in the wild for Inspiration IDK 🤷🏿‍♂️ I do love a Double trunks tho.. just looking on the nut show they tend to have Multiple trunks a lot of times. The taper on the trunk is petty good considering it's 33" high and thre movement running up the trunk is good for a almost Formal upright.. i though about Shortening the tree by creating a new leader but since the taper was decent i kinda want to use the whole tree..if anyone has some ideas I'm all ears and eyeballs or if you have a top point or something like that shos me what you got. My local nursery had three or them for 79 bucks each. Here's a few pictures one has the secondary trunk circled. One is the shows the taper and the movement of the trunk and some close ups of the type of foliage/general Appearance after removing a couple low branches and some Obscuring the front of the trunk. Btw I have wayyyyyy to many trees but yet I get another 🙃. 20240616_031839.jpg20240616_025439.jpg20240616_032043.jpg20240616_025608.jpg20240616_031703.jpg20240616_032151.jpg

You have a Heather bonsai don't you? If so i got a Heather from home depot that has good potential for being a cool little bonsai. Should I repot out the nursery container before it flowers this spring or after it flowers? Don't want to mess this one up or set it back and couple of years by repotting the wrong time.
