Why do branches stop extending?

The question came up because I have a few plain vanilla JMs with thread grafts and on one of them all the grafts suddenly stopped extending. They put on a bunch of new nodes and then just stopped. No idea why this happened. All the JMs are basically the same size and age, and are treated the same way. And then last night I noticed that the grafts started to extend again. No idea why that happened either (although I am happy). So, any ideas why it would stop extending?

They might have had some connectivity issues and the redirection of the sap stream can potentially play a part in this.
"Oh you're far away so you need extra resources pumped into you? Sure! Hey.. Wait a second! We haven't talked in a while. You're waaay closer to the roots now! Let me recalibrate and get back to you!"

Something like that, but in biochemical signaling.

Makes sense. It could be that I bent the thread branches so far and in an odd way causing that. Good news is they started up again. The grafts on the other JMs are almost twice as thick from the few weeks more of extension.
