Why can't I send personal messages?

I get more questions about this issue than any other. New members come to the site, register (thank you!), and then immediately try to send another member a private message. If you do, you will get an error message and a note to contact the site admin.

Due to spammers, we have had to institute a policy that requires people to post ten times prior to being able to send private messages to other members. Once you post ten times, your ability to send private messages will automatically unlock.

I'm not IT guy and don't understand what goes on behind the scene. But is it possible to instead of having the contact admin message, replace it with something like 'you must have minimum 10 post to be able to message board members"?

It likely is, but it's commonly considered good hygiene to not tip your hand to spammers too much, by letting them know the requirements to circumvent the filter.

That is a GREAT idea!!!
Because this has driven me nuts (pun intended) trying to "start a conversation with an Admin.... " - and I couldn't even do that.
