You should be thinking about Pitch Pine and Larch. I have never seen a native Red Pine bonsai of any quality.

I have to ask, are the wild red pine harder to collect than the tame red pine?

:p ...

Native Red Pine is hard to collect; at least that's the story I hear from those around here who have tried. As to Red Pine in general I think most people when hearing "Red Pine" think of Japanese Red Pine. The Red Pine that grows in N. America has really long needles, does not take to bonsai culture well and is difficult to harvest.

Wild or "tame," it is legal only if you have the permission of the land upon which they are growing -- government, commercial or private.

Or-----if you run really fast and can see in the dark.
