Where is the best place/forum on Bonsai Nut to ask for some help identifying a plant?

I have posted it everywhere from reddit to facebook to the local agricultural department and NO ONE can seem to identify it. Just don't want to post in the wrong place so I will wait to post until I get the go ahead on where. :)

Thanks

Well you seem to have my attention so why don't you post your question. I may not be able to help or you may not like my advise but I am willing to offer it.

Thanks...

I got this in the Chicago area 1 month ago from a nursery that has some pre bonsai but didn't know exactly what it was but thought it was a cotoneaster as they got it from someone else. I live in Raleigh, NC (Zone 7b) and had not seen a cotoneaster so I just figured that is what they looked like. I have been told differently though on Reddit and Facebook. Some on FB seem to think it's possibly a Pyracantha or Crataegus. I do not yet know if it fruits or has flowers but I figure next spring I will find out. My concern is the hardiness and winter care.

And here are the thorns and more pics of the leaves.

Thanks for any thoughts or advice.Happy to take different pics of you need.

It looks like a type of Hawthorn (Crataegus) but wait for more input from others before you call it.

Hey, remember now, baller, it's best to NOT follow the advice of others. ;)

So I can keep it inside year round? Right?

Only if you don't water it and keep it on top of the TV.

I think Pyracantha, but do not know which one.

Take it by Steve at Matsu-Momiji or try to get up with Bryan Mercer at the Bonsai Learning Center.

Martin

Martin - I live 3 miles from Bryan and he and Brad have mentioned you a few times this last summer. :)

I look forward to meeting at some of the upcoming workshops that were recently announced by Bryan. Also, looking to grab a few of those azaleas you have on FB. :)

Iamtheuniballer,

Well, there you go!

I am taking the Bjorn Saturday all-day only so far. This will be my third time. It is clear to me that I am learning more each time I work with him, which is unusual for visiting teachers. We will have to see on any of the other classes. It is hard on the time and monetary budgets, but they do have some nice material I would like to work on.... Hope to meet you at one!

Bid away sir, bid away!

Regards,
Martin

I agree with Vin. Pretty sure it is a hawthorn - though there are several different varieties that I cannot distinguish the difference between. It is definitely NOT a Cotoneaster. Cotoneaster doesn't have the serrated and lobed leaves.

Looks like,..

Chinese Elm? just looked at the thorns. Agree with the hawthorn assessment.

Foemina juniper

That was helpful.

It is NOT a cotoneaster, and may wll be a hawthorn of some type. You treat all haws about the same, so search for "Hawthorn Bonsai" here or on Google and see what you get.

First of a welcome to you. Then you have excellent resources right where you live. Check out the Triangle Bonsai Society. http://www.trianglebonsai.com/ Contact the officers with your ID problem and I'm sure one of them will be more than happy to help you. OH and join us on Dec 14th for our annual Christmas bash to include an auction of trees and materials.

See you there.

Thanks Doug! I have it in my calendar. I travel for a living so I keep missing the regular meetings and held off on the last auction because I had not been before and was a bit shy. I will be there this round though for sure. :)

Uniball, are the buds opposed or alternate? I can't really tell in the pics but they appear to be opposed.
