Found these bugs on one of my loblolly pines. Are they enormous armored scale? Only found 4 on one tree, other lobs next to it seem fine. Pic of tree shows where one was attached. 20230418_093113.jpg

Looks like scale and crawlers. The crawler stage is most susceptible to insecticides. My plan would be to squish/scrape off all the scale you see then apply any insecticide that's listed as effective against scale crawlers.

Actually I did find more on other pines. Looks like bad scale. The candles on one are toast

I use these identification apps pretty regularly. I have one for plants mushrooms, and insects. Try it, it’s called Picture Insect. It’s a free app you do not have to pay even if they try to get you to pay every time you open the app just cancel in the top right corner, take a photograph of the object in question and it’s pretty accurate. It works for insect larvae’s too!

I'm not in favor of promoting systemics, but in cases like this I think it's allowed. One or two treatments with a proper systemic insecticide will turn them into dead scale.
Generally speaking I'm against systemics as a whole, especially the fungicides and bactericides. And generally speaking I have two exceptions: mealybugs and persistent scale.
