This May I got gifted a bunch of unlabeled pine seeds and I decided to germinate a couple of. After some growing, I'm still not sure what kind of pine they are, or even if they're the same species. Any idea?
It's always hard to ID seedlings as many species have juvenile foliage that's very different from the adult foliage. I can only spot one cluster of adult needles on these 2 and it looks like there's 3 needles in that fasicle.
Location can be a guide but only really relevant if the species is a local, otherwise we are back to the whole world list of pine species.
You'll need to let these grow for a year or so until they settle down to produce adult foliage before we can even work out which group they came from. That will at least give you a guide to how to prune and manage growth.
After that mature bark is a good indicator but that may take 10 or more years. Final ID often rests on cones and that's a very long way off for these little trees.
