What is this tree I've twisted up?

I would be interested in trying a cottonwood myself. There is a species that can survive the desert, providing enough water is available.
Fremont cottonwood (Populus fremontii) is native to the valleys and riparian areas throughout NM. Usually lots of volunteers to be had under the mature trees. The OP probably has a different species in Ohio, possibly another poplar.

I think that's the species that I remember. We have a significant population here; the Pecos River makes for a rich variety of flora and fauna.
