What IBA concentration for trident cuttings and airlayers?

What IBA concentration hormone would be beneficial in taking trident cuttings and airlayers? I see most sold in 0.1% , 0.3% , or 0.8% concentrations. Which one would be the suitable strength without burning the plant?

**As a note I know regular tridents readily take from air layers and cuttings without any hormones but I'm trying my hand at a hard to root cultivar and would like any help I can get.

Thanks,
Julian

I use the purple liquid stuff, forget the name right now.....clonex?

3000 ppm IBA is the general purpose 'work horse'. Hormex also makes IBA powders in concentrations to 4.5% for REALLY HARD to root stuff.

You don't need any rooting hormone for air layers - it is built into the tree. Rooting hormone does kick start the physiological process and is only important for cuttings where you are in a race to grown functioning roots before the cutting desiccates. An air layer continues to be supplied water and mineral nutrients by the mother plant through the xylem that is left pretty much in tact.

Dip n Grow comes in a concentrate that you can dilute to suit your needs. That way you could do a small experiment and see which batch responds better. Another bit of advice is that Dip n Grow recently came out with a gel that you can mix the hormone with. Many say that the gel based products are better because it holds the hormone against the cutting longer.

Dirr states the following:
Successful cutting propagation has been elusive. Cuttings taken from mature tree
in late June and treated with either 2.0% ppm IBA or 25% chloromone, fine sand,
60 and 36% rooting.
Trees were at least 4 to 5 years old. Late June, 3 to 4 nodes, tip pair removed, wound,
8000 ppm IBA-Talc, 9 perlite:1 peat, mist, 70F bottom heat, rooted 95%. Five cultivars
rooted 75-95% with same treatment. No mention was made as to the age of stock trees.
Senior author (Dirr) has had no success with cuttings from mature trees even with high
IBA (1% solution). There are definitely superior selection that could be made.

I broke his paragraph for the sake of clarity. They are accounts of two different sets of
data; followed by his admission that he, personally, has never made it work. Don't you
just love the encouraging note to end the record on.

Dip-N-Gro is 1. % and I paint it on layers straight. Even though science says it's not necessary. Some of the trees are 4-500 years old and and all the layers are important to me so I haven't taken the time to test one with no hormone. Such is the plight of the amateur groping in the dark. I also use live sphagnum now with better results than dried commercial. And a certain propagator said to soak Tridents in 20% IBA for 15 minutes. I was impressed enough at the time to make a note of it.

20% ?? Do they even sell 20% IBA? That seems really strong--I would think 20% by volume acid would burn trees.

That's why I hesitated to post this. But I went out and checked the note. Is there no way to PM on this site?

Yeah you can. Just go to their profile page and click start a conversation under the information tab.

I just looked up if they sell 20% IBA and they come in tablets. The 20% is by volume of the tablet of which you then dissolve in water or alcohol. You could then adjust the concentration of water to an appropriate ppm desired. What I would want to know is to what ppm this propagator said to use as the 20% IBA isn't an actual indication of the concentration of IBA used.

I had interpreted your 20% IBA to be IBA by volume which is how most of the gel and powder rooting hormones are rated. 20% acid by volume would definitely burn and maybe kill your cuttings/airlayers.
