sorry about the basic question but i have googled around and never found a specific answer to this

i know pruning causes more side shoots to emerge but what else, specifically, if i prune the end off a branch, will it case the branch to thicken up faster, slower, or the same as if i hadn't pruned it.

if i prune the ends off all the major branches on a tree (banyan tree in my case), what effect (if any) will that have on the truck?

thanks

Cutting the ends sends energy backwards into the branch which will release dormant buds. The fastest way to get branches to thicken is to let them grow without pruning.

thanks, i had no idea, i thought pruning would somehow 'balloon' the energy into the cut branch and make it fatter faster.

i have some new trees i just got from the nursery and started shaping them and was about to prune, so now i know to leave them alone and let them grow

can i assume that's the same for the main trunk? if i don't prune, it with fatten up faster?
