In terms of houseplants I have a Hoya that has survived over 20 years in water, without water changes. It is too big to move. Just add water occasionally.
Trees, for bonsai - I suppose there a number this would work for. Bald cypress is obvious. Nyssa aquatica, water gum is another. Willows are an obvious choice. Problem with willows is they need a cold rest, when winter comes, if the water freezes, it could break your container and possibly mechanically damage the roots. Red twig dogwoods, the ones that are swamp species would be a good choice.
