Looking for JBP seeds sourced from Mikawa JP. I've searched all around the internet, haven't found a reliable source.

Used to get them from Clark M. Long, rest in peace.

Anyone know where I can source some? Thanks in advance.

Please feel free to PM me.. I'll send you some seedlings once they've sprouted, but first I need some seeds

The designation "Mikawa" is not really a cultivar according to the article below. It is a source of black pine and there is apparently a lot of variation.

I don't know if what Peter Tea says is accurate, but he's asked an expert in Japan. If it is true, buying Mikawa seeds is kind of a crap shoot.

Interesting article, first time reading it.

I have a 5 year old JBP that my buddy grew from seeds that he also got from Clark M. Long. The seeds were labeled Mikawa JBP seeds.

The bark is already flaking and looking really good.

In any case, it can't hurt to buy some that are from the Mikawa region.

Still looking if anyone has a source they can point me to!

I was about to say the exact same thing. Though "mikawa" black pines are supposed to have desirable characteristics regarding bark and growth pattern, they are not a sub-species or cultivar.

I guess this is why "mikawa" became popular.

If there was another way to increase my chances of growing JBPs with good characteristics, I would buy those seeds.

It's a risk when you invest 5-7-10+ years and have a tree that will never develop good bark. Time and effort that you will never get back.

Unfortunately, all the landscape JBPs near me have pretty shotty bark.

Still looking.

If anyone has a source from which they've grown JBPs from seed that have great bark and other bonsai characteristics, please do share!

I'm strongly considering on airlayering the little tree I do have to produce trees that have the exact same characteristics. Except with seeds I could grow 100s that I can then cull down in a few year's time.

Found some really good seeds, sourced from JP, from someone I now consider a friend.

Will be starting a good grip of batches of JBP that are from different JP regions.

Now let's see what they look like in 5-10 years.
