Trident ROR Numero Uno

So I have wanted to do a ROR since I got started this stuff. We will see how it goes

It got packed with some moss and wrapped tight before potting it up. How did I do?

When you say wrapped tight do you mean with some sort of plastic film, or do you mean the black tubing in your pics?

Foil actually with some sphagnum moss its all buried and I didnt take pictures of that. The tubing was just for initial root setting.

I’m also using foil on my first ROR, a Japanese maple cutting. Roots have already start coming out the bottom of the pot within 2 months so it seems the foil has directed them downwards nicely

Great that more people are starting to use the foil wrap.
@Moridin you have not mentioned what species this is. Looks like some sort of maple which are great for ROR but I would be a little wary of having soil over the top of the foil. Tridents in particular are prone to throwing new roots at surface level. If one escapes over the top of the foil it will usually grow faster and thicker than any others and destroy all the good planning and work. I would just brush the soil away from the base of the trunk until the foil is exposed to prevent wayward roots escaping over summer.

It is a trident and I did not know or think of that. I'll get it sorted here this morning and thank you for the advice.

Here’s my foil wrapped ROR project with the top exposed. The sphagnum is there to keep the roots from drying up.

Seems to be doing well.

I see a little tree in there and a air layer off the top in the future.

Well I have been just been growing this thing out trying to trunk it up and letting the leader grow. It seems to be going ok

It has almost doubled trunk size over the past growing season so we will see how it goes over the next few years.
